"This area has traditionally been more suburban in nature, and what we'll provide is a more urban environment," said Abbitt Goodwin, a partner in Columbia Development.

Developer Presents Ambitious New Plan For Wegmans Shopping Center in Cary

Cary, NC - Restaurants, hotel, office and luxury multifamily – they're all in the revamped Wegmans site plans for the Eastern Cary Gateway project that a South Carolina development firm will be submitting to the town this week. Columbia Development has published on its website the new drawings and plans for the proposed 92-acre, mixed-use project at Cary Towne Boulevard and Interstate 40. The project has been in various planning stages for nearly two years.
The renderings show a mix of 6- and 8-story office and hotel buildings, a cluster of retail and restaurant buildings with second- and third-floor office spaces, luxury apartments and parking decks that all total about 2 million square feet of new commercial and residential development. The big-box Wegmans grocery store chain confirmed in January 2016 that it would be anchoring the new project, which at the time was expected to be a more retail-focused development project on the state-owned land.

Cary, NC - A long-awaited project that could bring office, retail, restaurants, hotels, multifamily housing and a Wegmans grocery store to one of the largest remaining pieces of vacant land in Cary is moving forward.
Columbia Development Group, a Columbia, South Carolina-based real estate development firm, expects to submit a rezoning request to the Town of Cary on Monday to make its vision a reality and bring thousands of new jobs to what is known as Cary's eastern gateway. The 92-acre site is across the street from Cary Towne Center near Interstate 40.
"Upon arrival, this rezoning proposal will enable the creation of a beautiful and unique destination for individuals, families and businesses in Cary and the surrounding Triangle region to live, work and play," Abbitt Goodwin Jr., a partner at Columbia Development Group's Raleigh office, said in a statement.
Columbia wants to bring up to 2 million square feet of mixed-use space, including two hotels and multifamily units – most of which would be over the retail space, according to the developer. It would also include an amphitheater, green space and parking decks.

The Eastern Cary Gateway Special Planning Area covers about 800 acres bordered by Chapel Hill Road to the north, Interstate 40 to the east, Cary Towne Center to the south and Maynard Road to the west. Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans is an 88-store family-owned company that is ranked as one of the top supermarket chains in the country. It's looking at a site across the street from Cary Towne Center, in the suburban town west of Raleigh.
Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale said the company is working through lease negotiations and hopes to have a final agreement in the first quarter of this year. She said she couldn't "speak to the possibility of future sites" in North Carolina.

Cary, NC - Wegmans Food Markets, an 88-store company that is ranked as one of the top supermarket chains in the country, is looking to open its first North Carolina store in Cary across the street from Cary Towne Center.
Columbia Development Group has submitted preliminary plans to the town that include thousands of square feet of retail, restaurant and office space, plus some residential, structured parking and potentially a 130-room hotel. The company has contracted to buy the land from the state for $21.15 million.
Wegmans, with locations in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts, boasts a "European open-air market feel" with a pharmacy, ready-made meals, a pizza shop, coffee shop and more. The company plans to open at least 13 more stores in the coming years, according to the Wegmans website.
Representatives of Columbia Development Group discussed its preliminary development sketch plans with Cary staff at a pre-application conference Wednesday, Jan. 13. The plan shows 200,000 to 300,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space; 300,000 to 600,000 square feet of office space; and 300 to 600 apartments.

Fayetteville Observer: Harris Teeter Coming to Ramsey Street in Northern Fayetteville

Fayetteville, NC - A new, super-sized Harris Teeter grocery store would come to a fast-growing section of Ramsey Street, under a site plan that won preliminary approval this week.
According to Fayetteville planners, the new commercial development is to be called the Shoppes at King's Grant and anchored by a 78,000-square-foot Harris Teeter - the same size of another Harris Teeter store that opened this week in Moore County with a beer and wine bar and more than a dozen other speciality bars. The concept is more than 50 percent larger than older Harris Teeter supermarkets.
The Fayetteville Zoning Commission unanimously voted Tuesday to recommend approving the plan for the 19-acre site, which includes outparcels for restaurants, smaller retail shops and professional businesses. The plan also includes a gas pump island - another feature of the bigger Harris Teeter.

Triangle Business Journal: Costco Selects Apex Site for Third Triangle Store

Apex, NC - While it has been rumored for years that Costco, the members-only warehouse discounter, wants to open a third store location in the Triangle to capitalize on the affluent neighborhoods around Cary, it looks like that plan is finally moving closer to reality.
The Apex planning board on Tuesday recommended approval of a retail development project called Nichols Plaza on 35 acres fronting busy U.S. 64 at the intersection with Laura Duncan Road.
A closer review of a transportation engineer's meeting notes shows that Costco will be the anchor tenant at Nichols Plaza with a 149,500-square-foot retail warehouse building and gas station. The property will also have nine outparcels for other future retail and service businesses.
